Moxibustion
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion, also known as "moxa", is an ancient Chinese Medicine therapeutic treatment that relies on heat to aid the body in the healing process. Moxa cones and sticks are made from the wool-like substance found on the leaves of the Artemisia Vulgaris plant, which is more commonly known as "Mugwort". When burned, this wool creates a strong, penetrative heat that releases a distinct odour unique to moxa.
What are the different forms of Moxibustion?
Moxa comes in a variety of forms such as handmade cones, sticks and even adhesive cones. Most often, it is applied directly or indirectly on areas of the body that correspond to a specific acupuncture point.
What is Moxibustion used for?
Moxibustion is used to;
- Warm specific Chinese meridian channels and expel pathogenic cold
- Strengthen Yang within the body
- Promote and restore a smooth flow of qi and blood
- To prevent disease
- To maintain homeostasis within the body
Moxibustion should be a warming and healing treatment that reinvigorates and restores the body's natural ability to heal. Your practitioner has been trained to perform this treatment by following the strictest safety protocols. If for any reason you are uncomfortable during the treatment, it is important to communicate your concerns with your practitioner. Please note that there is some risk of burning or scarring with this treatment, but this is extremely rare.
