Auricular Acupuncture
What is auricular acupuncture?
Auricular acupuncture is a therapy that uses acupuncture needles to stimulate external parts of the ear which correspond to various organs and energetic systems of the body. One of the key benefits of auricular acupuncture is that it can be performed relatively quickly using the "Fly Needling" technique which involves a swift, focused insertion of the needle, gently into the ear. Auricular acupuncture can be used to help treat pain, insomnia, skin problems, emotional and physical disharmonies as well as addictions, but it should not be considered a "cure-all". Rather, it has been found to support the body throughout the healing process.
What is the 5 Point NADA Protocol?
Auricular acupuncture is often associated with the 5 Point NADA Protocol which is used to help treat addictions by increasing the release of endorphins which reduces anxiety levels and therefore encourages the body to relax. This chain reaction helps decreases cravings, mood swings, irritability and other behaviours associated with addition. The 5 points are as follows;
(1) Sympathetic – engages the nervous system by promoting relaxation and pain reduction
(2) Shen Men – reduces anxiety and nervousness by activating the parasympathetic nervous system
(3) Kidney Point – calms fears and heals internal organs
(4) Liver Point – for detoxification, blood purification, and to quell aggression
(5)
Lung Point – promotes breathing and the ability to let go of grief
One of the most common points needled on the ear is called Shen Men. Research has found that this point activates the body's parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) which stimulates a network of nerves that induce a sense of relaxation and calm in the body. The PNS functions indirectly to the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) which creates a "fight or flight" reaction in the body, which is often the more dominant system functioning within our body. Once the body's PNS is engaged, then it is in a better position to begin healing.
