Summer Heat, Hormones and Women’s Energy: A TCM Perspective

Many women notice that summer affects them in ways they do not always expect.

You may feel more tired, more irritable, less patient or more easily overwhelmed. Your sleep may become lighter. You may wake in the night feeling hot or restless. You may notice more headaches, digestive discomfort, night sweats, hot flushes or a general sense that your body is struggling to keep up.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, this makes sense.

Summer is associated with heat, movement, activity, expansion and Yang energy. For some people this feels uplifting and energising. For others, especially women who may already feel tired, stressed, peri-menopausal, post-natal, menstruating heavily or running on empty, summer can be overwhelming.

Your body may already be working hard to regulate hormones, digestion, sleep, emotions and energy. Add warmer weather, longer days, disrupted routines, more social plans, alcohol, travel, late nights and less rest, and the system can start to feel overwhelmed.

When summer feels like too much

In clinic, women often describe feeling tired but wired. They may be exhausted during the day but unable to settle properly at night. They may feel hot, restless, emotional or easily irritated. Some notice their PMS feels worse, their digestion feels more sluggish or their usual coping capacity feels much lower.

In TCM, I look at whether there is too much Heat in the body, whether Yin is depleted, whether Qi is low or whether the nervous system is struggling to settle.

This does not mean anything is “wrong” with you. It may simply mean your body is asking for more support, more nourishment and a steadier rhythm.

Women’s bodies need rhythm

So much of women’s health is connected to rhythm.

The menstrual cycle has a rhythm. Sleep has a rhythm. Digestion has a rhythm. Hormones have a rhythm. The nervous system responds to rhythm too.

When life becomes too busy, too hot, too stimulating or too irregular, the body can start to feel unsettled. This can be especially true during perimenopause, after having children, during stressful periods or when you are already feeling depleted.

Regular meals, enough rest, gentle movement, hydration and quiet moments can all help the body feel safer and more regulated.

Gentle summer support from a TCM perspective

Try not to skip meals, especially breakfast. Your body needs nourishment to create energy for the day.

Choose lighter meals if that feels right, but keep them nourishing. Cooked vegetables, soups, grains, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu, beans and simple warm meals can often support digestion better than relying on cold snacks.

Stay hydrated, but be mindful of too many iced drinks. In TCM, too much cold can weaken digestion, especially if you are already prone to bloating, loose stools or fatigue.

It can also help to reduce things that create more heat in the body, such as too much alcohol, caffeine, spicy food and late nights. This is especially important if you are already experiencing hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, irritability or poor sleep.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to slow down. You do not have to match the high energy of summer every day.

How acupuncture can support women in summer

Acupuncture aims to support the body’s natural ability to regulate itself.

For women who feel depleted, overheated, anxious, hormonal, tired or out of balance, treatment may focus on calming the nervous system, supporting sleep, nourishing Qi and Yin, easing tension, supporting digestion and helping the body feel more settled.

Each treatment is tailored to the person in front of me. Two women may both say they feel exhausted in summer, but their underlying pattern may be completely different.

One may need more support for digestion and energy. Another may need calming and cooling. Another may need support around her cycle, sleep or for perimenopausal symptoms.

This is why acupuncture can be such a thoughtful and individual way to support women’s health.

Listen before your body has to shout

If summer leaves you feeling drained, hot, restless, emotional or out of balance, your body may be asking for a different kind of support.

You do not have to wait until symptoms become overwhelming.

Sometimes small changes, more rest and regular treatment can help the body feel calmer, steadier and more able to cope.

At NRQi Studio, treatments are calm, unhurried and tailored to you.
